The child sitting on their bed now has a mobile device in their hands with Internet and social media access.

Our social media connected teen is now not only exposed to the people in their neighborhood, or just the people in the United States.

A mystery “young attractive woman” is encouraging men to perform sex acts on Skype and then blackmailing them.

There have been 20 reports so far this year where men aged between 17 and 36 have been targeted, according to the Herts & Essex Observer.

Webcam blackmail is a crime where an online attacker lures victims into taking off their clothes on camera and, usually secretly, allowing them to record a video.

The attacker will then make a threat to make the video public unless money is paid.

Victims in Plymouth include John Pearn, who told sextortionists to 'get stuffed' and urged others not to be cowed by the blackmailers.

However, at least four victims have killed themselves after webcam blackmailers tricked them into performing online sex acts.

“Users of these tools are continuing to find that despite having no physical contact or interaction with their victims, they can still be identified, tracked down and brought to justice by the NCA and its partners.” The NCA has urged computer uses to avoid clicking on unknown links or files sent from unidentified or suspicious sources.

The Daily Mirror went to Africa to find how this teenager and another Briton were driven to take their own lives by criminals in the Ivory Coast and found police there struggling to cope with the rackets operating via a network of scammers, internet cafes and Western Union cash transfers.

The National Crime Agency had 1,245 cases of "financially motivated webcam blackmail" reported to their Anti-Kidnap and Extortion Unit in 2016, up more than threefold on 2015.

The software can turn victims' webcams on and off, access banking or other personal information, download new and potentially illegal content, and instruct the victim's computer to help commit acts of criminality such as denial-of-service attacks.
